Foot wart / Plantar wart

Foot wart / Plantar wart

What Are Foot and Plantar Warts?

Foot warts, including plantar warts, are small, rough growths that commonly develop on the soles of the feet. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which enters the skin through small cuts or breaks. Plantar warts often appear on weight-bearing areas such as the heel or ball of the foot, which can cause discomfort or pain when walking or standing. Unlike other types of warts, plantar warts may grow inward due to pressure, forming a hardened area surrounded by thickened skin (callus).

Common Causes of Foot and Plantar Warts
  • Direct contact with HPV, often from walking barefoot in communal areas such as showers, locker rooms, or swimming pools
  • Sharing shoes, socks, or towels with someone who has warts
  • Weakened immune system, which makes it easier for the virus to take hold
  • Small cuts, cracks, or damp skin that provide an entry point for the virus
Symptoms of Plantar Warts
  • Small, rough, or grainy growths on the soles of the feet
  • Black dots within the wart, which are tiny blood vessels (commonly called "wart seeds")
  • Pain or tenderness when standing, walking, or applying pressure to the affected area
Treatment Options for Foot and Plantar Warts
  • Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter or prescription-strength salicylic acid can help remove layers of the wart over time.
  • Cryotherapy: A podiatrist may use liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart, which causes the tissue to die and eventually fall off.
  • Minor Surgery: For stubborn warts, a podiatrist may perform a procedure to remove the wart under local anesthesia.
Education and Prevention
  • Avoid Walking Barefoot: Always wear sandals or shower shoes in communal areas to reduce the risk of contracting HPV.
  • Practice Good Foot Hygiene: Keep feet clean and dry, and change socks regularly to prevent damp environments that promote viral growth.
  • Avoid Picking at Warts: This can spread the virus to other areas of the
  • Disinfect Shoes and Socks: Wash socks and disinfect shoes regularly to reduce the chance of reinfection.
